Been a while. A few things have changed.<\/p>\n
Last time I wrote I was still work\u00ading in retail, three days a week. That went out the win\u00addow on July 31st 2006, rough\u00adly two weeks after I hand\u00aded in a short\u00adened ver\u00adsion of my res\u00adig\u00adna\u00adtion. Not much fan\u00adfare from any\u00adone about it \u2014 sad in a way \u2014 but I was hap\u00adpy to escape the down\u00adward spi\u00adral of Coles.<\/p>\n
So I bummed around for a few months, played a lot of WoW<\/a>, gave job search\u00ading a go, did some con\u00adtract work through my moth\u00ader-in-law\u2019s busi\u00adness for Minch\u00adin\u00adbury Den\u00adtal Care<\/a>, got slight\u00adly con\u00adcerned about anoth\u00ader down\u00adward spi\u00adral, and signed up for a course at Went\u00adworth Falls TAFE<\/a>.<\/p>\n And so, in cir\u00adcum\u00adstances that I\u2019ve come to smile about while God points and laughs, I\u2019m doing the same course that Michael did when he left The Ware\u00adhouse about two years ago: Cert IV in Web Design.<\/p>\n Yes, the core stuff of this course is the things I\u2019ve been doing since 1994 in my spare time. And it relies on some skills I got from my last TAFE course in 1995. But, heh, I final\u00adly have some sol\u00adid work to con\u00adcen\u00adtrate on instead of the occa\u00adsion\u00adal con\u00adtract, and I\u2019ve got plen\u00adty of gaps in my education.<\/p>\n At this stage of the course (three weeks in) I\u2019m still enjoy\u00ading the struc\u00adtured learn\u00ading side of it, and to a less\u00ader yet sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant\u00adly large extent, the social aspect. And I can say that I\u2019m enjoy\u00ading using skills I had no real out\u00adlet for in the last few years \u2014 PHP in par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar. I\u2019m enjoy\u00ading get\u00adting back into Javascript, although I still have mem\u00ado\u00adries of how shaky client-side pro\u00adgram\u00adming was back in the day.<\/p>\n Which kin\u00adda led to why I\u2019m up at 6:45am again. I\u2019ve been doing the right thing for the last month or two and going to bed before 1am. Today I got up and just read through\u00adout the entire day \u2014 blog, arti\u00adcles, ref\u00ader\u00adences \u2014 click\u00ading through end\u00adless links until final\u00adly I found some sort of clo\u00adsure by run\u00adning over things I\u2019d read ear\u00adli\u00ader. It appears that in the last month I\u2019ve missed a few inter\u00adest\u00ading things hap\u00adpen\u00ading with our good friends at the W3C.<\/p>\n HTML5\/XHTML5. Woot. Big con\u00adgrats to the WHATWG on get\u00adting recog\u00adnised. If only Mozil\u00adla was owned by Ver\u00adi\u00adzon, it\u2019d be a Can\u00addi\u00addate Rec\u00adom\u00admen\u00adda\u00adtion by now\u2026<\/p>\n \u2013<\/p>\n Direct\u00adly or indi\u00adrect\u00adly lead by Joe Clark<\/a>, I end\u00aded at Maguire vs. Socog<\/a>, an acces\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty court case involv\u00ading Syd\u00adney\u2019s Olympics Com\u00admit\u00adtee. Fol\u00adlow\u00ading the link chain I loaded up IBM\u2019s Acces\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty site<\/a>, and to put it franky, was fuck\u00ading horrified.<\/p>\n It actu\u00adal\u00adly made me angry. In my feed\u00adback I described their site as a self-par\u00ado\u00addy. Sen\u00adtences like \u201cWalk\u00ading the Talk\u201d, with a near\u00adby \u201cLearn more\u201d link lead\u00ading to an all-tables page\u2026 and even bet\u00adter, that page con\u00adtain\u00ading a sec\u00adtion enti\u00adtled, \u201cMar\u00adket\u00ading: Send\u00ading the right mes\u00adsage.\u201d The right mes\u00adsage, appar\u00adent\u00adly, is to use invalid XHTML Trans and a table layout.<\/p>\n I\u2019ve got\u00adta get some sleep.
