{"id":18,"date":"2007-03-07T18:10:07","date_gmt":"2007-03-07T07:10:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/xhva.net\/log\/?p=18"},"modified":"2007-03-29T00:55:03","modified_gmt":"2007-03-28T13:55:03","slug":"soup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/xhva.net\/log\/2007\/03\/soup\/","title":{"rendered":"Soup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So many months ago my jour\u00adney to Soup began at <a href=\"http:\/\/slashdot.org\/article.pl?sid=06\/12\/12\/220227\">Slash\u00addot<\/a>, where I was linked to <a href=\"http:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=JzqumbhfxRo\">Lasse Gjert\u00adsen\u2019s \u201cAma\u00adteur\u201d<\/a>, and in amaze\u00adment fol\u00adlowed the trail to his oth\u00ader clips and then to the reply videos, one of which was <a href=\"http:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=PmnjdOri-ig\">Erlend Viken\u2019s \u201csoup injec\u00adtion\u201d<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Towards the end of Erlend\u2019s vid the music swings into a \u201cprop\u00ader\u201d part of one of his songs, Ambu\u00adlance for Human. I real\u00adly liked it, so I went to his one-man-band <a href=\"http:\/\/myspace.com\/soupsound\"><strong>Soup<\/strong>\u2019s Myspace page<\/a>, hop\u00ading for oth\u00ader sam\u00adples. At the time there were three full songs avail\u00adable via a flash music play\u00ader \u2014 <em>Pre\u00adlude<\/em>, <em>My Jus\u00adtine<\/em>, and <em>Sag\u00adamore<\/em> \u2014 which were all great. (He\u2019s since added the full ver\u00adsion of <em>Ambu\u00adlance for Human<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Hop\u00ading that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soupmusic.net\/\">Soup\u2019s oth\u00ader web\u00adsite<\/a> would have down\u00adloads, I fol\u00adlowed the link. I glee\u00adful\u00adly down\u00adloaded <em>My Jus\u00adtine<\/em> and <em>Sag\u00adamore<\/em>, which played while I down\u00adloaded his pre\u00advi\u00adous album record\u00aded under a dif\u00adfer\u00adent name, <a href=\"http:\/\/ikt-student.hivolda.no\/~viken\/soup\/soupgiveitanempire.htm\"><strong>Final Concierge \u2014 Give it an Empire<\/strong><\/a> (link may change, use one above if&nbsp;so).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Give it an Empire<\/strong>\u2019s <em>There\u2019s a City under\u00adneath the Ice part II &amp; III<\/em> is one of the most beau\u00adti\u00adful pieces of music I\u2019ve ever heard, build\u00ading from a lone\u00adly, haunt\u00ading sonar ambi\u00adence into a del\u00adi\u00adcate chime melody then a sor\u00adrow\u00adful rage against the lon\u00adli\u00adness. There\u2019s a sub\u00adtle trick with vibra\u00adto fre\u00adquen\u00adcy though\u00adout the melody (par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly not\u00adi\u00adca\u00adble around 4:30 into the song) that always freaks me out, since I have a soft spot for the kind of math-influ\u00adenced melodies fea\u00adtured on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Pi-Symbol-Various-Artists\/dp\/B000009MZW\">Pi sound\u00adtrack<\/a> a few years&nbsp;back.<\/p>\n<p>So just over a week ago I gave into temp\u00adta\u00adtion and ordered <strong>Come on Pio\u00adneer<\/strong>, Erlend\u2019s new CD, via Pay\u00adpal on his Myspace page. He\u2019d replied ear\u00adli\u00ader to my email ask\u00ading about post\u00ading costs for Aus\u00adtralia, and I was sur\u00adprised that it\u2019d be the same as the US&nbsp;rate.<\/p>\n<p>Yes\u00adter\u00adday I col\u00adlect\u00aded my disc from the mail\u00adbox and was all excit\u00aded, even more so when I dis\u00adcov\u00adered how nice\u00adly pack\u00adaged it was. I\u2019d heard about half the songs on the album before but now I had a phys\u00adi\u00adcal CD in my hand, with the knowl\u00adedge that the guy who made the music on it had also put the pack\u00adage togeth\u00ader and sent it to&nbsp;me.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Squash those mis\u00ader\u00adable ants<\/em> remake on the album is excel\u00adlent. I\u2019ve always appre\u00adci\u00adat\u00aded the tech\u00adnique of cut\u00adting from a dark, haunt\u00ading tune (<em>Psy\u00adcho<\/em>) to a hap\u00adpy-sound\u00ading, melod\u00adic one (<em>Squash<\/em>), because it makes me care\u00adful\u00adly eval\u00adu\u00adate the lat\u00adter and in this case I don\u2019t think it\u2019s a hap\u00adpy song. :P<\/p>\n<p>Today while I was rifling through things to do, I was lis\u00adten\u00ading to <em>Squash<\/em>. Dis\u00adtract\u00aded, I thought I\u2019d look up the lyrics. Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly I did\u00adn\u2019t find any\u00adthing, but I ran over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhort.no\/artist\/soup\/\">Uhort.no<\/a> and to my great joy found anoth\u00ader Soup song named <em>Sound\u00adscape of a burn\u00ading airofloat<\/em>, about the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hindenburg_disaster\">Hin\u00adden\u00adburg dis\u00adas\u00adter<\/a> and con\u00adtain\u00ading parts of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=F54rqDh2mWA\">Her\u00adbert Mor\u00adrison\u2019s radio broad\u00adcast<\/a> of the event.
