The prob\u00adlem with your gen\u00ader\u00adal\u00adi\u00adsa\u00adtions \u2014 in the case of Fire\u00adfox, <em>oh, no one uses the His\u00adto\u00adry menu so we\u2019ll hide the View, Edit, Tools, Help, Book\u00admarks and File menus as well<\/em> \u2014 is that you start cater\u00ading to the \u2018dumb\u2019 audi\u00adence, who would be bet\u00adter off learn\u00ading a lit\u00adtle com\u00adplex\u00adi\u00adty in the long term. This is why it\u2019s zero-sum.<\/p>\n<p>What makes this whole thing so bizarre is that these opti\u00admi\u00adsa\u00adtions are focussed on sav\u00ading small amounts of screen space on desk\u00adtops where the mon\u00adi\u00adtors are increas\u00ading\u00adly large and high-res. <strong>Mobile != iPhone != Net\u00adbook != Desk\u00adtop<\/strong>. Don\u2019t apply the same set of real-estate rules to the desk\u00adtop as the iPhone \u2014 they\u2019re a total\u00adly dif\u00adfer\u00adent envi\u00adron\u00adment, and any user who expects the app to be exact\u00adly the same is unre\u00adal\u00adis\u00adtic. The Fen\u00adnec team under\u00adstood this, the Opera Mobile team under\u00adstood this, but the desk\u00adtop UI design\u00aders seem amazed and daz\u00adzled by the idea of sav\u00ading 5px of ver\u00adti\u00adcal space on a mon\u00adi\u00adtor that aver\u00adages 768px&nbsp;tall.<\/p>\n<p>The essen\u00adtial jug\u00adgling game here is bal\u00adanc\u00ading the expo\u00adsure of fea\u00adtures with ini\u00adtial visu\u00adal com\u00adplex\u00adi\u00adty. If you\u2019re a long term user (&gt;6 months) of an app, how much visu\u00adal atten\u00adtion do you pay to an area of the app you don\u2019t use? I would think the major\u00adi\u00adty of peo\u00adple gloss over the details, just like I don\u2019t visu\u00adal\u00adly recog\u00adnise the His\u00adto\u00adry menu when going for Tools. Does His\u00adto\u00adry get the way? No. Would I care if it\u2019s removed? Prob\u00ada\u00adbly not. Should you nuke the entire menu bar to solve the prob\u00adlem of one word being there that I already don\u2019t notice?
